GASTROFIX iCash App

POS App Design (June 2013)

The GASTROFIX point-of-sale app "iCash POS" for restaurants–widely known simply as "GASTROFIX"–was one of the first apps of its kind and thus a pioneer in the industry. The Berlin-based company Gastrofix GmbH operated internationally; the US version was called PEPPERKORN POS.

The app was developed specifically for gastronomic businesses to simplify, improve and speed up the work processes of employees. It offered these businesses and their guests many advantages thanks to its wide range of functions and ease of use, from ordering with table allocation, individually created restaurant plans, stock and staff management, billing and data processing in the central cloud.

I worked on the UI/UX between 2013 and 2014 and as I was sadly unable to complete the work on the app, I am only showing selected screens here. The app previously had very chaotic, non-uniformly designed screens, sometimes with very chaotically arranged elements. I reduced the design language to an almost flat design with simple monochrome icons and only sparsely used skeuomorphism where it made sense. Sizes, spacing and colours were largely harmonised and many elements were completely rethought.

The app and cloud website were white label products, they could be customized and branded according to the customer's wishes. Many companies used GASTROFIX as the basis for their own apps, either just with a recolored and/or even extensively modified GUI. Some examples can be seen in the screenshots below.

In January 2020, due to its then unrivaled advanced POS technology, Gastrofix was acquired by Lightspeed with all employees and became part of the Lightspeed family. However, even over 10 years later, large parts of my GUI for the Gastrofix iCash app are still present in the Lightspeed app, as well as in that of Sum Up, including a large number of icons, widgets and other elements that I designed (as of December 2023).
